You will be invited to attend a club tour, where we will introduce you to the club, facilities, and explain the membership process.

If you decide to proceed, you will be invited for a membership interview.

If your application is successful, you will be invited to join the club as a probationary member.
This process ensures new members understand the club’s expectations and safety culture before beginning their shooting journey.
Before applying for a handgun licence, you must complete a Firearms Safety Course.
This course includes:

A theory assessment

A practical safety assessment
Once you successfully complete the course, you will be able to apply for your Provisional Handgun Licence.
Full instructions on how to complete your licence application will be provided in your welcome pack, which will be emailed to you after joining the club. We will book you in to the first available course.
A Provisional Handgun Licence allows new shooters to participate in club activities while they complete the required participation period before applying for a full licence.
During this period:

You must shoot under club supervision.

You will complete required competitions and club participation.

You will continue building your skills and safety knowledge.
- You will be encouraged to see the many matches shot at Yarra.
- Participate in a mandatory Air Training Program.
You may apply for your Full Handgun Licence once you meet the following requirements:

You have been a financial member of the club for at least 6 months

You have completed a minimum of 5 competition shoots
Once eligible, you can begin the process of applying for your full licence through Victoria Police LRD.
Please note that this process can take some time to complete.
You cannot purchase a handgun until:

You hold a Full Handgun Licence

The club committee approves your first firearm purchase
All first handgun purchases must be reviewed and approved by the committee before proceeding.
Before purchasing any handgun, you must obtain a Permit to Acquire (PTA) through Victoria Police Licensing & Regulation Division (LRD). This permit authorises the purchase of a specific firearm.
For shooters who have recently received their full handgun licence, there are limits on how many handguns can be owned during the first six months. During this initial period, licence holders are generally restricted to possessing no more than three handguns, consisting of:

One .177 calibre air handgun

One .22 calibre or centrefire handgun

One muzzle-loading black powder handgun
Prior to submitting your PTA application to LRD, it must be reviewed and endorsed by a club committee member.
Please note that the first PTA issued to a new licence holder is subject to a mandatory 28-day waiting period while it is processed by LRD. Please note, it is likely to take longer than this.
Permit to Acquire application forms can be downloaded from the Victoria Police Licensing & Regulation Division website.
Committee members are generally available at the club:

Photos of committee members are displayed in the club foyer so you can easily identify them.
